Cathedral Rock is located on the east side of Sedona, accessible via Highway 179. Traveling from Central Phoenix to the trailhead takes approximately 1 hour and 49 minutes under normal traffic conditions.

As you drive up Highway 179 from Interstate 10, you will pass landmarks such as the Visitor Center, Bell Rock, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross before reaching Back O’ Beyond Road, which leads to the trailhead.

Best Time to Hike Cathedral Rock

Sedona, including Cathedral Rock, is a year-round destination. However, summers (Memorial Day to Labor Day) can bring temperatures nearing 100°F, making hiking less enjoyable and potentially unsafe. Generally, avoiding hikes when temperatures exceed 90°F is recommended. Cooler months, from October to April, offer ideal conditions for outdoor activities. Sunrise and sunset hikes are particularly stunning, even during summer, when temperatures are slightly lower.

To address increased traffic at popular trailheads, Sedona has implemented a shuttle system operating Thursday through Sunday. Visitors can park at designated park-and-ride locations and take a shuttle to trailheads. The trailheads are also accessible outside shuttle hours—before 7:00 AM and after 5:00 PM.
